Small business Sunday is a chance for me to help small businesses, many of which are local. It is an opportunity to help highlight and feature their incredible services and products to our Modern Mama audience. Many of these businesses are fellow parents, starting out and with the pandemic, could use the extra boost! Please take a moment to learn more about one of these amazing businesses below. Check out my last small business Sunday feature here.
This week’s small business Sunday is a local store that I just love, Real Rad Deals! If you live in Abbotsford/Chilliwack, you likely already know about this amazing business. For those of you who do not know about it, this is the reason why we do these small business Sunday features! This week I am excited to help get the word out on this amazing business that I have been buying from for years. I discovered Real Rad Deals back when its founder, Real Desmarais operated out of his driveway. It has been amazing to see how much his business has grown in the last few years!
Real Rad Deals is a no-frills discount grocery store that caters to helping low-income families and those who struggle to afford healthy food options for their family. Anyone can shop there. He has a grocery store packed with great priced food items.
Real Rad Deals also donates large amounts of food to local support services to help those in need. Every Saturday they load up and give to the Guru Nanaks Free Kitchen who then distribute the donations to many different outlets.
Real has always been a very charitable guy, he is always willing to help others and has devoted his work to sourcing and supplying food as low priced as possible. The deals that he has are amazing! Real gets all kinds of food in his store, brand name, dairy free, gluten free, organic, vegan, fresh produce – you name it. I often go and buy deals then throw the items into the freezer at home for when I am ready to use it. I have bought cases of produce – cheap, organic chocolate bars. I get a lot of our gluten free products there because it is so much cheaper than the regular grocery stores. His selection always changes based on what he can bring in. You can see what the daily specials are and the newly arrived items, by following Real Rad Deals on Facebook. You can also visit the store at 31713 South Fraser Way Abbotsford, BC. Just off Highway 1.
What made you choose this type of business?
I did not choose this, it chose me! I was a volunteer for a non-profit food organization. I loved the concept. When that organizations failed. I kept in contact with all the suppliers and re established a business from the connections that we previously worked with. In time we established amazing contacts that help create what we are now.
What is your favorite small business (aside from your own)?
Rempel meats. They have been serving customers since 1973. They are in Abbotsford BC.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Never give up no matter what speed bumps are in your way. I started this venture with an employment insurance check and grew it 1 step at a time. Hard work and dedication will take you a long way as well as creating a program that gives to others. They will always be there for you if you work hard for them.
If applicable, has your business been affected by COVID19? If so, how?
We were affected in a positive way. With the rising cost and low availability of some items, we were able to maintain a price structure that was affordable and much cheaper than all other stores.
What are your long-term business goals?
To grow to the point of having many locations available to help as many people as possible.
What are you most looking forward to with the launch of your new business?
What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?
Meeting my new life partner through the store.
A big thank you to Real Desmarais for answering my questions and being willing to participate in this week’s small business Sunday feature. If you like deals, you need to check out Real Rad Deals.
