Getting a great night sleep is everything when you are a parent. It can be the biggest deciding factor in how you manage to get through your day: good or bad. As a mother to two boys I find myself always battling my sleep schedule, I have also managed to find a few great tricks to get myself to sleep and stay asleep when I am having a tough time. So here are my five tricks for helping you get that great night sleep you hope for on a more consistent basis!

Temperature

When I sleep temperature plays a huge factor for me, I like to be cool enough in my room so I can still use my comfiest blanket. Having my big fluffy comforter is a big comfort for me and I love to feel cozy and snuggled in. Of course when I get too warm I love being able to stick one foot out without freezing. This is why I always make sure my room is cooler than the rest of the rooms in the house, especially during those warmer months. Being too hot at night and waking up in a sweat is a surefire way to get me to start my day around 4am, keeping it cool keeps me asleep longer and prevents me from tossing and turning.

Scents

I am very sensitive to scents and when my room smells more like my partners work cloths than it does clean laundry I know I need to do something about it. This is when I get busy cleaning up my space and tossing my partners things into a pile for them to clean. I will then open my windows, fluff my blankets, clean my sheets if needed and will spray my bedding with a mix of water and essential oils. This gives me the ability to change scents depending on my mood and can even use oils to help encourage calmness and sleep. This is a great way to really add a bit of peace to your bedroom in just a few minutes, no one wants to sleep in a place that smells more like a gym bag.

Cleanliness

There has never been a night where I have slept well in a messy room. I always get the most sleep in a space with the least amount of chaos and I have to admit this is my biggest hurdle. Most parents I talk to end up having a room that is more of a storage space than a room. Filled with clutter, too much clothing and a blaring television. I do everything I can to keep the television out of the bedroom and I work diligently to keep my bedroom mess to a minimum. If nothing else my side of the bedroom is usually in decent state of affairs and I am happy with that. A clean space is a clear mind that isn’t easily made anxious, which means a better more restful sleep.

Mood

When my mood and emotions are playing a big role in how little sleep I am getting I know that I need to do something about it before I try to suffer through a sleepless night. I know I need to calm myself and refocus my mind to positive things to help soothe my anxiety. Meditation, even for a few moments, has been a huge help for me in terms of getting long restful sleeps. When the weight of the day seems like too much some simple long purposeful breathing can really help. That isn’t for everyone though, some need a more physical way to release those emotions and maybe a night run or quick workout would be better suited to helping you get a great night sleep.

I remember the last time I had a great sleep. It was a nap. My now 16 month old was probably 4 or 5 months old. I laid on the couch and she went in her bassinet and we both just slept. My husband was out back with our older daughter and our friends. I was so tired that I didn’t even hear them coming in and out of the house! Oh, I miss sleep.

The last time I had a great sleep would have been about 1992 before I had children. Once I had kids I was no longer able to sleep thru the night (my bladder)Nowadays the pain keeps me awake. I had taken a tylenol 3 last night in the hopes of sleeping more then 4.5 hrs but that did not work so I was awake at 4:30am. Even when I had my last surgery I did not sleep more then 4 hrs and I really thought I would because of the drugs they give you

A few weeks ago, I wasn’t feeling great so my husband volunteered to take care of everything for the that needed done the following morning. I took some cold medication and slept in the spare room with ear plugs in. I got a full 12 hours of uninterrupted sleep and woke up feeling great. It was just what my body needed to kick out whatever illness was brewing inside me.

This week our weather has been warmer so I’ve been able to sleep with the window open a bit. The fresh air made me have a wonderful, deeper sleep.

My last great sleep was when we did a long hike this early Spring and was too tired that when I woke up I was surprised that it was morning and I slept through the night.
