Music plays a much more vital role in young children’s development than you may realize. Those silly songs may just be fun for you but the songs, rhymes, and rhythms help children learn new words, understand sounds, and develop pronunciation. Finding a program that has a curriculum that not only develops music skills, it also nurtures creativity, self-expression, and confidence while also supporting social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development is not easy. However, we have this incredible business right here in Edmonton! We are thrilled to share all about what Music Together YEG has to offer Edmonton families.

About Music Together YEG

Music Together® was founded in 1987 by Kenneth K. Guilmartin and Lili Levinowitz, PhD at the Centre for Music and Young Children in Princeton, New Jersey. Now – nearly 40 years later – the Music Together program is offered in over 2,500 communities in over 40 countries worldwide.

In 2003, Jodi Howard introduced Canada to this amazing program when she moved back to Edmonton from New York and started Music Together YEG. It quickly became Edmonton’s #1 Early Childhood Music Program and has remained on parents’ “must-do” list ever since!

With over 30 classes a week at 7 locations throughout Edmonton and Sherwood Park, Music Together YEG hosts both parented classes for children 0-5yrs and unparented classes for children 5-8yrs.

Using both original and traditional songs and chants, Music Together YEG will engage your child in activities like lap songs, fingerplay songs, large movement and instrument songs, vocal play, rhythmic play, play-along jams, and lullabies guaranteed to bring their musical imagination and expression to life!

Music Together YEG aims to create memorable musical experiences that will ignite your child’s natural enthusiasm to sing, dance, play, explore, interact and connect through music – now and forever!

Music Together YEG offers the highest quality Mixed-age Family Music Class for children ages birth to 5yrs and the grown-ups who love them. Designed to nurture every aspect of your child’s musical growth, this class encourages ALL children to participate, process, and experiment with music in whatever way is developmentally appropriate for them. It is a highly effective learning dynamic because it allows every child to create their own musical challenges and therefore their own successes. What a great kind of magic when you can empower a child to believe that there is nothing musical that he or she can’t do!

“Rhythm Kids®” is the unparented “next step” class that Music Together YEG offers for older kids. This program creates a judgement and pressure-free classroom that coaxes the confident music-maker in your child to come out and play! Your Rhythm Kid will be so busy having fun exploring basic hand-drumming techniques, rhythmic instruments, musical games and activities that they won’t even notice they’re being introduced to fundamental musical concepts that will keep them MUSICALLY CONFIDENT forever! Music Together YEG’s Rhythm Kids classroom is your child’s SAFE MUSICAL SPACE to sing, dance, move, learn, play, make music, make memories, and make friends!

What To Expect In Class

  • Fully trained, registered Music Together teachers lead groups of six to twelve children and their parents or caregivers (nannies, babysitters, grandparents, or relatives) in fifty minutes of music and movement experiences.
  • Each weekly class offers a dozen songs and rhythmic rhymes, including fingerplays, small- and large-movement activities, and instrument play.
  • Children and their adults have opportunities to create and improvise—making up new words to songs, offering movement ideas, making silly sounds, and sharing musical ideas from the family’s play at home.
  • The relaxed, playful, non-performance-oriented classroom setting respects and supports the unique learning styles, developmental levels, and temperaments of all participants, creating a strong sense of community.
  • Families receive a songbook/storybook each semester, along with a download code, to listen to music at home and on the go.
