If you’d asked me a year ago what my children enjoyed doing most after school, I probably would have admitted that screens had started winning the battle. Between tablets, television, and everything else competing for their attention, it felt like getting them outside was becoming more of a negotiation than something they naturally wanted to do.
I’m not against technology, and I don’t think children need to avoid it completely. It is part of everyday life now. However, I did miss those afternoons when they would disappear into the garden for hours, creating their own games, getting covered in mud and coming back inside exhausted from all their adventures.
Rather than constantly asking them to spend less time indoors, I decided we needed to make our outdoor space somewhere they actually wanted to be. It wasn’t about creating a perfect garden or spending a fortune on expensive equipment. It was about making the space feel safe, comfortable and enjoyable for the whole family.
One of the first things we looked at was the fencing. Our old fence had started to look tired after years of dealing with the unpredictable British weather, and it made the garden feel less inviting than it could have been. While looking for ideas from G&G Fencing, I started to realise that fencing is often one of the biggest influences on how a garden feels. It creates the framework for everything else, from children’s play areas to planting and outdoor seating.
We spent some time comparing different Fence Panels and thinking about what would work best for our family. We wanted something practical and secure, but we also didn’t want the garden to feel closed in. That was one of the reasons we liked the look of Slatted Fence Panels, as they offered a little extra privacy while still allowing light and air into the garden.
Once the basics were sorted, the whole space started to feel different.
Creating a Garden That Works for Real Family Life
For years, I think I had the wrong idea about what a good family garden should look like. I imagined neat flower beds, perfectly placed furniture and everything looking ready for a magazine photo shoot.
The reality of having children is very different.
A family garden is usually filled with footballs left on the grass, chalk drawings across the patio and outdoor toys that somehow never quite make it back into the shed. At first, I used to see those things as mess, but eventually I realised they were signs that the garden was being used exactly how it should be.
The goal was never to create a perfect-looking space. It was to create somewhere that felt welcoming and gave everyone a reason to spend more time outside.
The Small Changes Made the Biggest Difference
What surprised me most was that the things the children loved weren’t necessarily the expensive additions.
They loved having space to kick a ball around without worrying about damaging anything. They enjoyed helping grow strawberries and herbs because they could see the results of their work. Even simple activities, like making a bug hotel or searching for insects, could keep them entertained for an afternoon.
Children don’t always need complicated activities. Often, they just need somewhere that encourages imagination.
Having a garden that felt secure and looked cared for gave them the freedom to explore, while reassuring me that they were playing somewhere safe.
More Time Together Outdoors
The biggest change has been how naturally the garden has become part of our everyday routine.
After school, the children often head outside before starting homework. During warmer evenings, we eat dinner outdoors whenever we can, and weekends feel much more relaxed when everyone has space to do their own thing while still being together.
One person might be planting flowers, another might be reading, and the children will usually be creating some kind of game that makes very little sense to adults but keeps them entertained for hours.
Those ordinary moments are often the ones that become the best memories.
A Garden Doesn’t Need to Be Perfect
Looking back, I spent too much time thinking about what our garden should look like and not enough time thinking about how we wanted to use it.
The most important thing about a family garden is that it works for the people living in it. It should be a place where children can play, where parents can relax and where everyone feels comfortable spending time together.
Our garden is still far from perfect. There are always toys waiting to be put away, plants that need attention, and another project on the list for the next sunny weekend.
But it is full of laughter, fresh air and family memories.
And that is exactly what a garden should be.
