This past month has been full of changes, new routines and new environments and a whole lot of running around! With my oldest in Kindergarten and my middle child in Preschool we have been busy adjusting to it all and I worry that we haven’t been spending enough quality time together as a family. So we recently carved out some time for a family date night: it was super easy and a huge hit!
What We Did:
Carpet Picnic!!! This is one of my kids’ favorite things to do, we spread a blanket out on the floor, gather around and eat a meal. Usually I try and pick something that is easy to eat, a little bit exciting and doesn’t require too much of my time (unless family date night involves cooking together). So for this picnic meal we made Tacos in a bag — and it was a hit with everyone.
Recipe:
- 1 lb ground meat (beef, pork, turkey — whatever you prefer)
- 1 package of Taco Seasoning
- 1 bell pepper
- 1 – 2 tomatoes
- 1 small bowl of Salsa
- 1 small bowl of Sour Cream
- 1 small bowl of Shredded Cheese
- 1 Avocado, diced
- Half a head of lettuce chopped (not pictured above)
- Small bags of nacho chips (I bought the Halloween-Size bags because they were perfect for my littles but you can use larger bags too)
Cook the meat thoroughly and add seasoning; place meat in bowl. Put a blanket on the floor in front of the TV, put a bowl of each ingredient on the blanket along with the chips. Crunch the chips in the bag, add the other ingredients and enjoy!
What we Watched:
It wouldn’t be a family date night without a great movie, right?!
We watched Zootopia!!! My kids absolutely love Zootopia (we saw it in Theatres) and they were so thrilled to see it is now available on Netflix. I don’t think I can count how many times they have watched it since it was released this month but they chose it for our Family Date Night Feature too. Honestly I didn’t mind because I really like it too but there were some other great movies in the running as well.
Earlier this month Netflix Canada added a collection of 2015-2016 Disney movies to their already awesome list of movies and as a girl who grew up watching (and loving) Disney movies this is the best news! My kids already love Netflix so introducing them to new Disney movies just got a whole lot easier.
These were the choices I gave the kids for our Family Night Feature:
And Zootopia…. which ultimately won out, this time anyways. We had so much fun having a Family Date Night Picnic that I think we will be making this a monthly event! Given the choice what movie would your kids choose for family date night?
