Are you an Urban or Suburban Mama, where do you live?

I’m a suburban mama! I live in a lake community on the edge of Calgary and it’s wonderful.

Tell us about your children

Sebastian is 9 and Anabelle is 7. They are a perfect pair, but also so different from each other. Sebastian has a big heart, lots of empathy and is very sweet. He loves video games, soccer and watching hockey. He’s a picky eater who really, really, really gets offended by “smelly” foods like pizza and ketchup. Anabelle is a force to be reckoned with. She is strong, wild, creative and stands her ground. She loves all forms of dance, reading and crafts. Unlike her brother, Anabelle LOVES pizza… and chocolate.

Tell us about your typical weekday

My alarm goes off around 3 a.m. The dog and cat get up with me, but the rest of the house is sound asleep. On a good day, I’m up and in the basement for a workout. Other days I hit the snooze button. I’m at work by 5 a.m., on TV until 9 a.m. and then I spend the rest of my work day in meetings, chasing new interviews and working ahead on stories. After work, I get a bit of a break to either do errands or have a quick nap or shower – before the kids are done school at 3 p.m. Then it’s feeding time and usually racing off to any number of kid activities like dance and soccer. Then we have a family wind down with a TV show or some trampoline time. I catch up on any final work items or emails, and then I try to go to bed by 9:30 p.m.

Do you have help?

I have a wonderful husband who is very helpful with all things related to house and home. He’s in charge of the morning rush of packing lunches and getting the kids off to school as I am at work before anyone else wakes up! We also have a great support system of family close by if we need to call on them for help!

Who cooks dinner?

I do! It’s one of my favourite parts of the day, actually. I love cooking. It’s like my zone out, Zen, meditation time (even as the kids are making a bunch of demands!). Also, I’m home early, so it all times out well for our schedules that I’m preparing dinner before the night time rush begins.

How often do you buy something just for you?

Good question. I’d love to shop for clothes once a month — that would be a dream – but that requires deep pockets and extra time. I do enjoy going out to restaurants and travelling, so I look forward to those moments.

Do you exercise regularly and if so, what and how do you fit it in?

Ugh! That depends on the day, week, month, or year. I’m so inconsistent. I find if I don’t get up early and exercise first thing in the morning, then it just doesn’t happen. If anyone’s got any expert tips out there about getting consistent, please let me know! We have a gym area in our basement and a few apps with a million workouts on them that work really well for me. I also have a gym membership, but usually just use that after work on days I need to decompress or clear my head on a cardio machine with headphones on.

What clothing lines or stores do you like to buy for your children?

Nowhere specific. They are more focused on look and comfort than any specific store. My son wears shorts 12 months a year. He’s a t-shirt and shorts guy. Even in Calgary winters. He enjoys Calgary Flames merch (Go Flames Go!). My daughter loves wearing dresses and earrings. She’s got one jumpsuit outfit right now she would wear every day if she could. She’s grown out of it. It’s way too small for her but it’s still her favourite. I try to let them be them.

Three things in my purse right now are…

Chapstick. Gum. Hand sanitizer. I’m pretty boring.

My favourite drugstore buy is?

Toothbrushes. The Colgate 360 Sonic powered toothbrush, to be specific. I change out my toothbrushes several times a year and probably (most definitely) brush my teeth way too many times in a day.

My guilty pleasure is

90s music. All genres. All the time. And no guilt. Just pleasure.
