“What to Expect When You’re Expecting” has been described as the bible of American pregnancy and has been on the New York Times Bestsellers List for 351 weeks and counting! Admittedly, I actually read very few books in my pregnancy, but I did have a borrowed version of What to Expect.
When I was asked to review the Series’ first 3 books, I was surprised to know that there was more than ONE! In fact, there are many, and an amazing online resource site for moms and moms-to-be!
While the books are exhaustive in nature (more like an encyclopedia than the bible), I want to share my personal “favorite thing” from each book!
What to Expect When You’re Expecting is now in it’s 4th Edition. My favorite thing about this book is that it supports Chiropractic Care during pregnancy. It also covers a lot of the same topics I cover with my moms-to-be in my Chiropractic practise, like exercise, sleep positions, compression stockings, carpal tunnel syndrome, lower back pain, Kegel exercises, and more.
Like it’s previous counterpart, What to Expect- The First Year details month by month what you can expect. My favorite thing about this book is that it has a First Aid & Safety Guide. It covers bites, burns, lip & teeth injuries, poisoning, and much more in a ‘Do’s & Dont’s’ type format. The book also encourages that every parent take a CPR Course. Modern Mama has been offering Infant & Child First Aid & CPR since 2009 with St. John’s Ambulance. The next Spruce Grove event is October 2nd in the evening.
My favorite thing about What to Expect- The Second Year is all the heading titles that resonate so much with where I am at right now in my parenting- rejection, resistance, struggle, trials, conflict, wars, frustrations, and on and on and on. As a mom to an almost 2 year old and just turned 3 year old, it’s tough sometimes! Reading through this book made me feel like I can and should expect these things, that my kids are NORMAL, and that we will get through the toddler years!

These are great resources, and any new mom 2 be will find a wealth of information within it’s pages. It gets the conversation flowing between patient and care provider, and nothing is wrong with that! 🙂
I have all three but read only the first one. It was my reference when I felt something new. I constantly wondered if what I was feeling was normal. It was a great guide as a newly pregnant woman. My sister in law said that the symptoms she felt did not coincide with the book.
I read the first book with my first pregnancy, with my second I used the phone App. I found the book to be more in depth, but for a second pregnancy the app was good enough.
Congratulations Allison… you won! I will contact you via email to arrange for your delivery:) ~Josline
I loved reading the weekly updates when I was pregnant. It made me feel informed & like I had control over the process. These books are great, every new parent should have them.
I was obsessed with the iPhone app when I was pregnant. It totally helped me cope throughout the entire journey. It provided an incredible amount of information that helped reassure me and keep me calm. Even through this first year I’ve referenced the site numerous times – it covers EVERYTHING! =)
