Jump Gymnastics is coming to North Van!

As a North Shore mama of two active little girls, I’m especially thrilled for Jump to be expanding into our neighbourhood. Our 4YO and her best friend are already registered for classes starting in a few weeks, and they’re beyond excited!

For those of you who don’t know, Jump Gymnastics is a kids physical literacy gym; like teaching our kids the alphabet as a foundation to reading and writing, physical literacy is learning the ABC’s of an active life. Jump teaches fundamental movement skills like jumping and balancing together with fundamental sports skills like throwing and catching, giving kids the physical literacy they need to participate, with confidence, in sports and activities at any level.

Jenifer Hood, herself a mother of 3 girls, opened the original location in Vancouver back in 2008. Jen and her husband Mike, an international gymnastics judge, have been in the sports world for more than 20 years. Jen as a teacher and coach found herself, as she says, “in too many community rooms, sitting on plastic chairs, watching my kids being taught the wrong lessons.” Jen decided to go back to school to study business and opened Jump 18 months later.

Jen’s vision was to develop a strong curriculum for Jump based on academic research into physical literacy, gymnastics and BC’s own school curriculum. Fundamental to physical literacy is that it’s non-competitive before the age of 6, allowing kids to first learn the skills before learning to train and then to compete.

Programs at Jump Gymnastics start as early as 6 months and go until they’re 8. Not forgetting her experience, Jen remembered us mamas when designing Jump; both the downtown and North Van location have comfortable lounges with free WI-FI. Incidentally, the North Vancouver location also backs onto green space and has free parking!

Popular with parents, Jump will offer Date Nights at the new location – drop them off for supervised play and pick them up again having eaten and already in their PJ’s (Saturdays only on the North Shore for now). Jump birthday parties are also a big hit on Saturday and Sunday afternoons!

The North Vancouver space will share some of its 4,600 square feet of customized gym with Kids Physio Group. Through pediatric physiotherapy and non-competitive developmental gymnastics, Jump and Kids Physio hope to nurture and empower all kids on the North shore to achieve their highest gross motor potential and have fun along the way.
