About Edelweiss Preparatory School
Named after the Edelweiss flower, a symbol of lasting love and adventure Edelweiss’ mission is to instill an early love of learning and curiosity in their students. Celebrating 38 years of nurturing, curiosity, and creativity in the Calgary community their preschool, junior kindergarten, and kindergarten program have become the gold standard. Having won several awards including Best Preschool by Calgary’s Child magazine several years in a row as well as the 2026 Parents Choice award winner. Their programming is unmatched with their focus on STEAM, fine arts, movement, and much more.
What to expect in the classroom:
- STEAM
We incorporate a blend of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math into our program to help kids develop critical thinking and natural inquiry skills. Students will have opportunities to explore engaging discovery centers and group activities.
Each week our Director, Mr. Walter, becomes “Captain Science” and engages students in a fun, hands-on science experiment.
- Fine Arts
Our fine-arts program includes a blend of Music, Drama, Dance and Art. Not only do our students have a great deal of fun participating, but these focus areas help to expand literacy, fine-motor skills and teamwork.
We share what we’ve learned throughout the year by displaying artwork and hosting concerts for Christmas, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and End of Year.
- Literacy
We use the Jolly Phonics and Learning Without Tears programs as part of our reading and writing skills curriculum. These programs are a fun and engaging way to motivate young readers.
We also offer weekly Spanish classes for our Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes. In these classes children will be introduced to the Spanish language through songs, games and hands-on activities.
- Movement
Movement activities are an important part of our program. Each class will participate in daily physical education in our large gym area or outdoors if weather permits. Our movement activities involve games, yoga and a wide-range of gym equipment.
- Special Guests
Edelweiss knows it is incredibly important to connect their students with their community both locally and globally. Throughout the year they will bring in special guests to share with their class! Past guests include local authors, a NASA Ambassador, presenters on bugs, animals and the Arctic.
- Field Trips
Getting out in the world and exploring is a wonderful thing for kids of all ages. Students at Edelweiss will get the opportunity to attend field trips throughout the year. They use a chartered bus and welcome parent volunteers (valid police check required).
Types Of Classes At Edelweiss Preparatory School
Preschool
This primary program was designed for children turning 3 years by Dec 31st of their registration year. As an introduction to school it is incredibly important that this program be warm and nurturing.
Classroom options for preschool are Tuesday/Thursday AM.

Junior Kindergarten
After an exciting year developing their new skills in preschool it is off to junior kindergarten! The classes are designed to enrich both the mind and character of every child within an environment rich in Phonics, Art, Science, Math, Language instruction and self esteem building activities.
Classroom options for Junior Kindergarten are:
2 day: Tuesday/Thursday PM
3 day: Monday/Wednesday/Friday : AM or PM.
