Giving Tuesday – Peace by Chocolate

peace

Giving Tuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Giving Tuesday was born and incubated at the 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. Giving Tuesday is now an independent nonprofit and a global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity

This movement has inspired countless businesses to factor giving back as a major part of their brand. Here at Modern Mama, we would love to highlight this generosity by shining the spotlight on these exceptional companies. On the first Tuesday of every month, we will post a “Giving Tuesday” blog featuring a Canadian company that has made it their mission to give back. If you are a company that would like to be featured, or would like to nominate one, please contact me at Lesley@modernmama.com

This month we highlight Peace By Chocolate, based out of Antigonish, Nova Scotia by a family that came from Syria to call Canada home. By combining cultures, and sharing this delicacy that they started in their homeland, they not only make beautiful sweets, but they give back by donating funds to peace projects across the world. This beautiful story has inspired a bestselling book as well as a movie. I mean who doesn’t love chocolate, and as they say one peace won’t hurt.

FROM SYRIA TO ANTIGONISH

For nearly 30 years we created and shipped our specialty treats all over the Middle East and Europe.

Like much of our homeland, in late 2012 the original Hadhad family chocolate factory in Damascus, Syria was destroyed in a bombing that forced our family to leave everything behind and flee to Lebanon.

For three years we found ourselves as refugees with little opportunity or hope. Our lives had been forever altered and we dreamed of being able to once again live lives we could love. When our family was invited to Canada, our dreams came true.

REBUILDING

With the support of our new community of Antigonish and the people of Nova Scotia, we have rebuilt our chocolate company and are once again doing the work we love.

Since Peace By Chocolate was founded at the beginning of 2016, we have been fortunate to share our passion for chocolate with new friends in our community of Antigonish, with people all across the province of Nova Scotia, and now around the world.

PEACE BY CHOCOLATE TODAY

Our desire for excellence is apparent in every piece of chocolate we produce. We passionately combine a blend of Syrian fillings and ingredients, including nuts, fruit, and spices, creating a little taste of heaven in every sweet.

Inside each Peace By Chocolate product is uncompromising quality, with each chocolate a little work of art in and of itself, exuding sophistication, style and excellence. We encourage you to try our chocolate soon because, after all, One Peace Won’t Hurt™.

PEACE ON EARTH SOCIETY

Peace By Chocolate donates 3-5% of all company profits to the Peace On Earth Society – an organization registered in Nova Scotia that donates funds to peace building projects around the world. The society work started unofficially after the Fort McMurray Wildfires when Peace by Chocolate launched a donation campaign to support all the evacuees and their families through relief organizations.

Our family knows what it was like to lose everything, to live in fear and struggle with the uncertainties of how each day may unfold. Since our arrival in Canada, our resilience has grown through the deep, consistent and generous support of people in our home community, from across Nova Scotia and through out country. We will be forever grateful to so many people for helping us secure the feelings of peace back within our hearts and the safety in our home.

We believe peace is a noble thing on earth that everyone should be fighting for. Since starting Peace by Chocolate we have always been trying to engage our community and work on the issues that matter.

peace

After remarkable support from Canadians from coast to coast, and customers from around the world, Peace By Chocolate grew quickly from its simple roots in a tiny home-based factory in 2016.  Having the chance to use our good fortune to give back has always been on the mind of our family.

In the fall of 2018, we formalized our support for peace building projects by having our company register the Peace On Earth Society with the Nova Scotia government to begin the process of creating a registered not-for-profit.

The goal of our founders and staff is to ensure we partner with like-minded organizations and communities leaders to allow us to give back and to support initiatives that helps foster peace and compassion to help alleviate the suffering of others. Our hope is that these initiatives will help deepen the conversations people are having and to help create change in some of the cultural norms currently embedded in our society.
