Playschool Spotlight: West Edmonton Playschool

*Disclosure:I did receive compensation in exchange for this blog post, as always all my opinions are my own*

January to March is the best time to begin attending preschool and playschool open houses and gathering information. Did you know that The West Edmonton Playschool has been around for 20 years!? Read along to find out all that they have to offer.

Programming

The three-year-old program offers a learn through play curriculum with a strong focus on the building children’s social, language, and creative skills. This is accomplished through free play, craft time, and circle time. They also offer a kindercook program which allows students to follow directions, measure, mix ingredients and work cooperatively. Gym time and outdoor exploration is also a very important part of their curriculum, as it helps to develop gross motor skills.

The four-year-old program focus’ on getting the students ready for kindergarten. The students will learn early literacy, fine motor skills in early writing through journals and worksheets. I was thrilled that they are also a bilingual playschool. They will be introducing the 4-year-old students to a few Spanish words and songs. Twice per month, they have their very own yoga teacher come and teach a class. This improves focus and the powers of concentration while developing a sense of calm. Yoga also improves memory and develops concentration skills.

Both programs offer a wide variety of educational centers including kitchen, dress-up, sand and water table, baking, and much more. They also go on a number of in-house and outside field trips. I also love that they have their very own vegetable garden! The students will participate in planting, growing, and harvesting their own vegetables.

Parent Involvement

As with most non-profit playschools parent involvement is crucial. This means the parents of the students must take a role in the operation of the playschool. This can be done by being apart of the executive or the parent committee. There will also be both a casino and bingo night throughout the school year and this does require parent involvement to make these events possible. If you’re unable to fulfill volunteering for either of these roles the playschool will cash the cheque that was taken at registration.
