Small Business Sunday With Lashes By Dani Yeg

*Disclosure: I do get complimentary services from this business. But as always all my opinions are my own*
Here at Modern Mama we love sharing small local businesses, especially ones run by moms. This week we are featuring Lashes By Dani Yeg, a lash studio located in the community of Tamarack run by Daniella Flores. I have been going to Daniella for many months and couldn’t be happier with my lashes. There are very few studios who offer oil-proof lashes here in Edmonton and I was very lucky to find her. So, I am excited to share a little bit about her business today.

1. What is unique about your business or What made you choose this type of business?

What I think makes me different than other lash artists is that my main focus is always going to be the health of my client’s lashes first. I am always factoring in my client’s natural lash health when designing my sets. The best lash extensions are the ones that we can have all year round. I have clients that I have seen for over a year and their natural lashes are longer and sturdier than when they first came to me. I have carved a small niche for myself of subtle but full lashes as opposed to the heavy, dense lashes we see on Instagram. Most of my clients are trying to achieve an every day look that they can wear to work, go to church, and go out with friends without the lashes overwhelming their appearance. Lashes should always be a compliment to an overall look and I specialize in making wearable, beautiful, lightweight, and flattering lashes.

2. What is your favourite small business (aside from your own)?

I tend to favor mom-run businesses. I enjoy seeing businesses like Modern Mama that are geared towards helping other moms and I enjoy seeing businesses that are run by hard-working moms like the fragrance line My Daughter’s Fragrance. Other businesses that I turn to first are locally based ones. I grew up with two strong ladies in my family, each owning their own spas: my mom, Carolina Flores owns and runs Jeamie’s Electrolysis Clinic in Bonnie Doon Mall, and my aunt, Yudit Normandeau owns and runs Advanced Skin Care Clinic on Gateway Blvd. Both of which employ mostly women and mothers. Because of these two women I knew that I would always work for myself, I learned how to be strong, and I learned to be a badass mom.

3.  If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

My advice would be to just start. No one can fully be prepared for the heavy burden of running a business. If you’re waiting for the perfect time, perfect economy, perfect home life, perfect skills, and tools, you’ll always be waiting. There is a heavy toll on action and inaction, you have to decide which toll you’ll rather pay. The beauty of starting your own business and working for yourself is that you have full control on the speed and trajectory your business will go. If you’re waiting because you’re worried that it will throw off your work/ home balance, then start slowly and take your time. If you’re worried that you don’t have enough funds saved up then put your pedal to the metal- start savings and in the meantime put pen to paper and start planning. You can get your business plan, your website, your logo, and your social media started. There are many low-cost things that you can do in the meantime. For every reason you can think of why you should wait, I bet that I can think of a way to plow through every excuse. The bottom line is just to start. Start today.

4.  What are your long term business goals?

Right now I am more focused on my short time plan of getting fully booked. My long term plan is to be fully booked and to have a striving side business of lash supplies. I have already started on that second business although it is slow going. I’m grateful for this time off that we all have. I’m putting a lot of time into both businesses with which I can dedicate towards planning and developing as much as I can.

5.  What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?

I have a lot of funny memories with my clients. I have been blessed with some of the funniest and charming clients in Edmonton. Some clients will tell me stories that make me buckle over in laughter (Leah included). Some clients have funny requests during our appointment: for example, I had one appointment where we played The Big Bang Theory on my phone while we lashed, with another client we played the audiobook for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (the Stephen Fry version of course).
