15 Family Friendly Things to Do This Spring Break

Spring Break has arrived!!!

If you are unsure of what you want to do with your family this year, we have found 15 family friendly activities. Some are free or less expensive than normal and all are worth checking out. The list below is in no specific order. Let us know in the comments or on Instagram or Facebook what your family is most excited to do this Spring Break.

Highstreet

Participants must visit each spring break photo wall at Highstreet Shopping Centre and spot the lady bug hidden in each photo wall. Participants write the colour of lady bug seen at each photo wall on the ballot provided, fill out the required contact information on the ballot and bring the ballot to the Highstreet Guest Services office for entry to win a $250 gift certificate in the Spring Break Photo Wall Contest.

Disney’s Dumbo

Circus owner Max Medici (Danny DeVito) enlists former star Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a newborn elephant whose oversized ears make him a laughingstock in an already struggling circus. But when they discover that Dumbo can fly, the circus makes an incredible comeback, attracting persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton), who recruits the peculiar pachyderm for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a charming and spectacular aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green), until Holt learns that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets.  Movie starts March 29th.

Gallery 7 Theatre’s Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat

This favourite musical extravaganza follows the Biblical story of Joseph and his coat of many colors. After being sold in to slavery by his jealous brothers, Joseph gains favour with Potiphar, the Egyptian noble, before rejecting the amorous advances of Potiphar’s wife. Joseph winds up in jail where he discovers an ability to interpret dreams. His new-found talent catches the attention of the Elvis-inspired Pharaoh, and Joseph is promoted to right hand man. But during a famine, his family needs his help and Joseph is forced to decide whether to forgive or take revenge. One of the most popular shows of all time, this fun-filled, irresistible musical by master composer, Andrew Lloyd Webber, promises to be an exciting theatre experience for the entire family! Show plays from March 22nd to & 30th, 2019.

Twilight Drive-In Theatre

The Drive-In is located in Aldergrove and shows start at 7:30pm. The shows from March 15th to 21st are Captain Marvel and Spiderman Into The Spider-verse. The price for general admission is $13.50, child is $8 and senior is $10.

Blossom at Metropolis

Blossom at Metropolis at Metrotown takes place March 5th to 31st, 2019 and brings the beautiful cherry blossoms indoors for a month-long installation in Grand Court. Stop by and take some photos of this unique one of a kind cherry blossom experience created by Vancouver creative arts studio Hfour. Visit Grand Court and enter for a chance to win a $1000 shopping spree daily! Burnaby Village Museum

Come check out the museum with free admission from March 18th to 29th. It is open from 11am to 4:30pm. Take a step in the past and wander the fascinating heritage village that has something for everyone or check in with the activity leader who will lead children in hopscotch, tic tac toe, bagatelle, skittles and horseshoes. Hammer and bang at the Blacksmith shop, talk to the teacher in the one-room schoolhouse, watch a silent movie, explore the restored Interurban tram, and cap it off with a ride the carousel for $2.65 a ride.

Healthy Family Expo

Canada’s largest food & health event for families is back at the Vancouver Convention Centre on March 24th. This full-day celebration features 200+ exhibitors, a 35,000 sq ft Active Kid Zone, and a star-studded line-up on stage, live dino shows, circus workshops, and so much more. Adults get in for $22 and children 0-16 are FREE!

Flyover Canada

BC Residents can take advantage of 25% off admission tickets and experience everyone’s favourite flight-ride. You will fly across Canada’s wide and exhilarating landscapes all while staying out of the rain. This all ages experience lasts approximately 25 minutes. This includes the preshow, the pre-flight briefing in the boarding zone, and the 8 minutes you’ll spend on the Ultimate Flying Ride.

Aquarium

Come visit the 50,000 creatures at the Vancouver Aquarium. They have special family programs and shows including ‘Meet a Penguin’ or ‘Shark: A 4-D Experience®’. Or maybe you’d prefer to get up close and personal with your favorite animal during an animal encounter? All of this and more at the Vancouver Aquarium this Spring Break. The aquarium is open 365 days a year from 9:30am to 6pm.

 

Vancouver Art Gallery

Workshops run daily from March 25th to 29th, 2019 from 12pm to 4pm. Admission is FREE for Gallery Members and for children age 12 and under when accompanied by an adult. Regular adult admission rates apply. From 12pm to 4pm Monday to Friday there are Art Agents as they bring the exhibitions to life through activities, questions and conversations relating to what you notice about the artworks on display. The Making Space will be open during the same time that will allow the imagination to soar. Daily workshops include Create Your Own Soundscapes with Lee Hutzulak, Move and Dance with Caroline Liffmann and Carolina Bergonzoni, Experiment with Textile Art with Derya Akay an Vivienne Bessette, Build an Assemblage Sculpture with Ewan McNeil, and Design a Mural Using Fabric with Maya Beaudry.

 

Science World

The featured exhibit was created by the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) in Chicago, A Mirror Maze: Numbers in Nature, is an interactive and immersive exhibition that exposes and explains the mathematical patterns that abound in the natural world. From the delicate nested spirals of a sunflower’s seeds to the layout of the universe, this exhibition provides a unique perspective on our daily surroundings. This exhibit is an additional cost to admission rates. The Omnimax is playing the Ryan Reynolds narrated Great Bear Rainforest.

Vancouver Kids Fashion Week

The Vancouver Kids Fashion week will feature designers RockBeBe, Kipop, La Movida, La Peronelle, Maman Salon, and Royal Luxury Baby. This year’s all ages show is from March 23rd to 24th from 10:30am to 1pm. Day passes are $25 and children 0-6 are FREE.

Carousel Theatre for Young People

The show runs until March 31st. Elephant and Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!” is a delightful new musical about two bestest friends and their many adventures; this charming story based on the best-selling book series by Mo Willems will light up our stage for the month of March with its silliness and exuberance. Join best friends, Gerald and Piggie, on a day where anything is possible! Filled with beloved characters and lively songs, it’s the perfect adventure for young audiences. Recommended for ages 3-8.

Sea to Sky Gondola

During March 16th to 31st children aged 12 and under ride free over the break. Mention “Secret Spring Break Deal” at the ticket window and receive up to 3 free children’s day tickets when you buy one adult or senior day ticket. Ride the gondola, walk along the suspension bridge and check out the falls.  There are also snowshoeing, tubing and daily children’s activities at the summit.

Richmond Outdoor Carnival

Westcoast Amusements is hosting the outdoor carnival at Lansdowne Centre, 5300 #3 Road, Richmond. The outdoor carnival will be open from March 21st to March 31st, 2019, with hours of operation varying by date and weather. It is slated to be open from noon to 10pm. Attendees can ride six attractions for $16.99 or purchase a daily wristband for $40. Tickets for rides may also be purchased on site individually and in groups of 20 and 40.
