Remember those New Year’s resolutions we all made about 5 months ago? I know we had good intentions, but who’s actually following them still? I lost sight of some of mine, but I’m ok with that because I have the entire year to get these goals right. One of my “resolutions/goals/challenges” was to do something out of the box (for me at least) that would put me in a situation where I was challenged, unfamiliar and uncomfortable. Why on earth would I seek to put myself in a situation like this? Honestly, I love being a mom, wife & Modern Mama Director; BUT there’s this other side of my body and mind that are calling for a different type of challenge. I’m always amazed at the ways one can grow when we let ourselves to get out of that comfort zone and go somewhere we’ve never been before.
Sometimes it’s a disaster and sometimes it is game changer. The thing is, you never know until you do it. Game changers don’t happen when you just think about on the couch.
When I was given the opportunity to participate in the Spartan Race, I hesitated for a second and then jumped at it! Here’s why:
- This is a race that scares me, but in a good way! The Spartan Race is an obstacle course event. You run, walk, climb, hang, shimmy, crawl, jump and roll through a variety of surprising challenges. There are 3 different types of courses- Sprint (5 kms & 15+ obstacles), Obstacle (13 kms & 20+ obstacles) and Beast (20 kms & 25+ obstacles). This means that I can try the “easiest” one, but it will still be a total challenge for this “race-virgin”.
- There are competitive and open heats for all fitness levels. Everyone from the newbie to the seasoned athlete will be able to compete. There is even a kids race in some areas!
- The Spartan Race is an International event and in Western Canada over 30,000 people will take the challenge this year. The closest races to Edmonton & Area are Westlock in June, Calgary in August and Red Deer in September. You can see all of the races in Canada here.
Up for the challenge, mama? Join me! I will be attempting the Spartan Sprint in Red Deer on September 13th and I would be honoured to share the experience with some other fearless mamas!
