Our tickets to attend The Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito were complimentary. All opinions are my own.
Tanisi or Hello. This is how we began the Incredible Adventures of Mary Jane Mosquito. A story of a little mosquito who has no wings and is having a very hard time making friends. We follow her on her adventure as she figures out what friendship is all about. Along the way we discover that Mary Jane has a beautiful voice and that kindness is what it takes to make a friendship work. The story does a wonderful job of incorporating song and the Cree language. The kids and I enjoyed learning Cree words like, Tanisi (hello). As a parent I appreciated how interactive the cast was with the audience. Mary Jane would have us repeat the Cree words aloud to her and then to each other. The music and the puppetry kept the kids entertained and engaged while learning a beautiful language and a lesson on kindness. Our oldest is 8 and she still enjoyed the play but for kids above that it may be a little on the juvenile side for them.
There was also time for questions and answers with the cast. Kids were encouraged to ask questions about the play itself and the set. The cast also asked the kids about what they had learned during the play. A great way to finish.

The theatre itself is a little tight. Every seat in the house is great, you and your little one will have a great view of the stage wherever you sit, however you are quite close to your neighbors. We found the washrooms to also be close quarters. A little extra patience is definitely required but the staff is super friendly and will help you out if assistance is needed. The Carousel Theatre does allow you to bring snacks and drinks in with you. That is a bonus. We bought a few bags of chips from the small concession stand for $2 each but I did see others with Starbucks and snacks they had brought from home.
If you are driving into Granville Island go early because parking is limited. We were there on a rainy day and the place was still packed. Also navigating your way around the Island once you are out of the car is kind of tricky. The kids did have fun looking at the large map and trying to figure out our path to the theatre though. (Once we found a map that is. ) The whole experience was a fun one and the kids and I are looking forward to our next play at the Carousel Theatre.
The 2019/20 Carousel Theatre for Young People season explores the theme Reach For The Stars. The characters dream big, explore new worlds, and sometimes fall backwards and learn how to move forward as they navigate the challenges that come with growing up.
