Twice a month we interview dads for our “How Does He Do It? feature. If interested in participating please reach out on Facebook or Instagram.
We are excited to introduce you to Toronto dads BJ Barone and Frankie Nelson. BJ and his husband Frankie are the bloggers behind Family Is About Love.
Are you an urban or suburban dad, where do you live?
We are definitely urban dads! We love the ease of walking out our door and everything is only steps away; doctors, grocery stores, parks, the subway. (Maybe we are lazy! lol) We live in downtown Toronto, ON.
Tell us about your children?
We have one son, Milo, 5 born via gestational surrogacy. He is full of energy, a fireball, loving, empathetic, little jokster who loves to explore and use his imagination!
Tell us about your typical weekday?
We are both high school teachers, so our mornings are all about routine. I wake up first and get ready, then Frank and Milo. I prepare breakfast for Milo, we get him dressed and then it’s out the door for school drop off. We are both lucky with our jobs that it allows us time in the morning to drop him off together, and pick him up together after school.
Do you have help?
We are very lucky that Frank’s parents live here in the city, so Milo gets to sleep over his grandparents house often, which is also great for us! We get date nights and Milo gets to make great memories with his grandparents!
Who cooks dinner?
I am a cooking teacher, so when I come home I am done with cooking and being in the kitchen! Frank likes to make dinners for us every night, and I make our lunches for work everyday.
How often do you have date nights?
We are lucky that Milo sleeps at his grandparents often, so we get our adult time in often. It’s important when you have kids to make the time as spouses to spend alone time and reconnect with each other. Parenting consumes your life, and it’s good to get that break once in a while!
What clothing lines or stores do you like to purchase for your children?
We are Canadian so we love our Roots clothing! We also buy from Zara Kids, Polo, and Lacoste.
Do you exercise regularly and if so, what and how do you fit in it?
It’s difficult to find the work/life balance and finding time to workout is hard, but I try to. I usually go after work during the week, if I am not too tired.
What is your favourite Christmas/Hanukkah gift that you have received as an adult?
Our favourite Christmas/Hanukkah gift that we have received as adults would have to be new luggage. We love to travel so it was a perfect gift we bought for each other!
What are you currently watching?
We hardly have time to watch tv, but when we do it’s usually just before bed. We love our reality tv, shows like Survivor, Amazing Race, Project Runway Antiques Roadshow and RuPaul’s Drag Race!
