We are all in the middle of practicing physical distancing, and while this time is very challenging for everyone right now, it is especially difficult for small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and we need to support them however we can, so every week we will be featuring some of our local small businesses.
Small Business Sunday continues with Modern Farmhouse which is a locally owned home decor and gift shop!
What is unique about your business or What made you choose this type of business?
I love helping people! And what better way than helping turn a house into a home! People often come in looking to update or just needing to change out old decor; we are able to help the customer use items they have at home & add a few new touches to complete the look! My goal is to be affordable & easy to achieve a Pinterest worthy space!
The store is not like a big box store. Our items are displayed as you would at home, making it an easy transition to buy it from the store & put it directly into your space! We also do not buy in bulk, which means the stock is always changing & most of our suppliers are Canadian or locally made!
What is your favourite small business (aside from your own)?
Since I was a kid we have stopped at Jack’s Drive In in Spruce Grove for ice cream, so I must say it has a piece of my heart!
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
One piece of advice for a new business is to do your own thing! Don’t compare or look at what others are doing, just concentrate on you & let your uniqueness shine!
What are your long-term business goals?
My long term goals are to continue to follow trends & fill the store with unique items not available anywhere else! I want people to walk into the store & feel at home & want to share the experience with their friends! I want Modern Farmhouse to be a destination!
What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?
We have so many fantastic & loyal customers who make the store a fun & happy place to work! I think this whole COVID experience has brought a weirdness to how we do our business – curbside – I love interacting with people & thanking them for shopping local!
