With back-to-school portraits or holiday card season approaching I decided to share my experience with Taneane Twele Photography.
My family had a photo shoot with Taneane Twele, of Taneane Twele Photography, last spring. I am not a fan of having my picture taken and my daughter has yet to meet a lens she doesn’t love. It had been a while since we had a multi-generational pictures taken which are very important to me to have. Taneane has a very calm and comforting demeanor which made it easy to relax. We shot inside her studio located in Mission, BC as well as outdoors in a local park. She would help position us in flattering poses and took lots of pictures so we would have a variety of options to choose from. When it was time to get our prints, we returned to Taneane’s studio in Mission, BC. We were given different package options so we could decide which was the most cost effective and had the opportunity to see the prints in hand versus looking online. After our shoot I spoke with Taneane about her experience as a photographer and her business.
How long have you been a photographer?
I have been a photographer for over 20 years.
Did you go to school for photography or is it a learned skill you’ve developed over time?
I graduated from Western Academy of Photography in 2001 and have continued my education at conferences and workshops.
You primarily seem to shoot people. What inspires you to shoot people vs. locations?
For me, pictures need people in them. I capture emotion and honesty through subtle details. Whether it’s for professional headshots or family portraits for your home, I make sure you are the focus.
What has been your most memorable shoot and why?
I don’t really have memorable shoots more memorable clients. I love meeting new people and getting to know them during their portrait sessions.
What area of photography would you say you specialize in? I love working with people one on one or in small groups so business portraits and young families are my favorite.
As a small business owner, what does supporting local mean to you?
Supporting local is huge! I work with a lot of the local businesses around town as well with organizations like The Downtown Business Association, Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures North Fraser.
What is your favourite season to shoot in?
Spring and Fall have always been my favorite because of all the beautiful colours.
Any tips for new entrepreneurs just starting out?
If you are a new entrepreneur in Mission you are very lucky. We have so many recourses at your finger tips like Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and Community Futures North Fraser. There are also so many opportunities to network with and learn from like minded entrepreneurs at groups like Connect Now, Chamber luncheons and so many more in cities all over the Fraser Valley. You don’t have to re-invent the wheel or go it alone, there is so much support out there, you just have to ask.
Who are three people you would have on your bucket list to photograph? I never had the desire to photograph anyone “famous”. I love photographing women, like myself and hearing their story. I also love photographing and capturing my family and my kids as they grow. I love looking back at their images from when they were little. You almost forget how precious they were until you look back at those moments in time.
