Are you an Urban or Suburban Mama, where do you live?

I would consider myself an Urban Mama that is transitioning to becoming a Suburban mom. My family recently moved from downtown Vancouver to the Olympic Village area to beautiful Coquitlam. We are loving life in the burbs, but the truth is I sometimes miss the hustle and bustle of downtown and how walkable it is.  That being said our new neighbourhood is so beautiful and having a backyard is a major, major plus with young children.

Tell us about your children?

I have two children, both born during the pandemic.  My son Hugo is nearly 2.5 years old and my daughter Sohana is nearly 14 months old.

Hugo is bursting with personality and is happy to make friends wherever he goes…even at the grocery store where he frequently strikes up conversations with other shoppers and staff.  He lights up my world with his warmth and cute laugh. It’s beautiful to see how quickly he has stepped into the role of big brother…he loves taking care of his little sister and often wants to help feed her.

My daughter Sohana has become quite the explorer since learning to walk.  My husband and I have nicknamed her “the investigator” because she truly finds a way to get into everything…cupboards, the fridge, my purses…the list goes on.  Her curiosity brings me so much joy!  I could spend all day listening to her babble. Her favourite word these days is “uh-oh” – not sure what that says about me as a mother…haha!

Tell us about your typical weekday

My typical weekday begins with an alarm at 3:20 a.m. and it is literally go, go, go until I get back into bed that evening.

I have a quick morning routine at home (which includes a strong coffee) before I am out the door and at work by 4:30 a.m. I am on air from 6-9 a.m. on Global BC’s Global News Morning and then I spend a couple hours looking ahead to the next day’s show and prepare for interviews.  I am usually home by about 1 p.m., at which time I try and fit in a Peloton workout before prepping dinner.  My husband takes care of morning drop offs at daycare and I normally pick Hugo and Hana up in the afternoon.  Once they are home we are busy with playtime, dinner, more playtime, bath time, bedtime for the kiddos and then bedtime for myself.  It’s exhausting just thinking about it…lol.

Do you have help?

Help?…I would consider daycare a big help, but other than that no, it’s just my husband and I.  My parents live on Vancouver Island and my husband’s parents live in Germany.  My brother and sister-in-law live nearby, but they are just as busy with their own kids.

Who cooks dinner?

I cook dinner 99.99% of the time, but I have to give my husband credit for taking care of cleanup.  Dinner before kids always had a spicy kick to it, but we’ve tamed our palates a bit to make space for kid-friendly meals.

How often do you buy something just for you?

Not that often, since it feels like most of our purchases these days are for the kids or for our new house.  That being said, I recently splurged on a new Sari and accessories for a Diwali celebration that I attended.

sonia sungerDo you exercise regularly and if so, what and how do you fit it in?

I absolutely love spin classes and bought a Peloton in the Spring.  I love getting in a good sweat and try to work out 4-5 times a week right after work and before I pick up the kids from daycare.  If I am feeling extra energized, I will throw in a weekend workout too while the kids are napping.

What clothing lines or stores do you like to buy for your children?

I have been purchasing a lot of clothes from H&M and really like their conscious line.  I also really like Zara’s selection when it comes to more formal pieces.

Three things in my purse right now are…

Egyptian Chamomile Tea (I always have tea beside me while I am on air), perfume, and a hair teasing brush.

My favourite drugstore buy is?

I am slightly addicted to lip care (can’t go to sleep without it). I always buy lip balm at the drug store.  I tend to go for the natural lip care lines that offer a bit of colour.

My guilty pleasure is?

I can sense the eyerolls coming, but my guilty pleasure is reality TV, preferably anything from the ‘Below Deck’ series.  After a busy day at work, living vicariously through yachties and their guests is just what I need to unwind.

I really enjoyed that article on Sonja. She’s a very busy woman/ mom/ wife/ etc. as are so many moms these days. It’s so nice that she can or tries to take a few minutes for herself which she should. I love you on the morning news, I really enjoy you reading the news. You are such a beautiful woman and have a gorgeous family. You look like you have everything under control, but don’t be disappointed if sometimes you don’t. I’m sure you are doing a fantastic job at home and on the job. Just enjoy your wonderful husband and special children, that’s what it’s all about. You deserve it.

Great read . How ever how about women that raise kids alone without a spouse or women working two jobs and trying to support their children . It’s great that this article focuses on a tv personality but it also kind of makes other women who may not have certain privileges such as going to university to get a decent job due to financial issues but still surpass and go above and beyond for their kids all alone without any support from parents or a spouse , aren’t they modern women too? Just a thought . It would be great too read a story where a woman does it all alone despite challenges in life and not about a woman that had a lot of support from parents etc.
