We are currently in the thick of staying-at-home and focusing on social distancing. This is a very challenging time for so many people and so many small businesses. We love supporting local and wanted to do our part in showcasing some fantastic small businesses every week.
This week we are showcasing Bucha Brew Kombucha. They are a local business that operates out of Delta, BC. Their kombucha comes in cans, bottles and on draft. Kara is described as equal parts super hero and dalmatian. Everything is exciting to her and everything catches her attention. She is the mother of two amazing boys, runs one of the fastest growing kombucha companies in Canada, and with any remaining moments she is off in the mountains ski touring, snowboarding, or mountain biking. We spoke with the founder Kara Sam about her business.
What made you choose this type of business?
I had my first son and was so excited to be on mat leave, we took a family vacation to Maui and I discovered kombucha. I was so excited to drink something that was non-alcoholic, low in sugar, high in antioxidants and so beneficial for my digestive system. When I came home I looked for local brands and couldn’t find any so I started making it and the rest is history!
What is your favourite small business (aside from your own)?
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
Entrepreneurship is definitely not for everyone, grit, hard work, passion and an amazing product are all necessary assets. In these uncertain times I also think that speed is your friend, a new normal is going to emerge so thinking about the future we want to co create is key right now and then exciting thing is, WE get to shape it!
What are your long term business goals?
They are always changing but the core of it is to positively affect as many people as we can using kombucha as the vessel. Teaching people about health and wellness, talking about sustainability and the every day choices we make and the effect they have on the planet. Starting the conversation small and watching the ripple as people tell their friends and family and so on. Building a regenerative community.
What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?
Good question- I have had a lot of customers invest in my company (we did a raise on frontfundr last year)… Maybe it was when I was early on in the business, my second son was about 5 months old and I had to bring him everywhere with me so he was at all of my important meetings. I was halfway through a meeting he had a massive blow out, full on, the diaper came no where close to holding it all in. We did end up getting the account but I spent the rest of that meeting cleaning up Ben’s sh@*tty diaper
Thank you to Kara for participating in Small Business Sunday.
