We are all in the middle of practicing physical distancing, and while this time is very challenging for everyone right now, it is especially difficult for small businesses. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and we need to support them however we can, so every week we will be featuring some small businesses.
Heart and Hope Designs is our next featured business. Heart and Hope Designs is a husband and wife team who started making wooden signs a few years ago and thought pottery would be fun to try. They bought a wheel and found an old school kiln on Kijiji. They love to create!
What is Unique About Your Business or What Made You Choose This Type of Business?
I will start off by saying I think all pottery is unique and beautiful. That is one of the things I love so much about it! We started out in a quest to create the perfect cozy mom mug! I have had a pottery fascination for a long time and I am an avid collector. Even though I still love them, some of my favourite pieces are not microwave or dishwasher safe! I am a busy mom of three and I wanted to create a cozy mug that felt nice in the hand but could also be thrown in the microwave for the many, many heat-up’s needed everyday!
What is Your Favourite Small Business (aside from your own)?
Morse Code Love Prints (@morsecodeloveprints)…My friend, Steph, makes beautiful graphic designs into cards, prints, pins, and more!
Also, The Softer Side of Concrete (@thesoftersideconcrete) …my sister-in-law makes concrete pots, bowls, serving pieces, and more.
If You Had One Piece of Advice to Someone Just Starting Out, What Would it Be?
Great question and also very hard to answer. I would say the same advice for anything in life, ‘If you really want something, do not give up.’ Perseverance wins!
What Are Your Long-Term Business Goals?
We would love to continue to grow! Our market plans have been put on hold with everything, but we have seen a huge growth in our online sales (thank you, everyone!) and would love it to continue!
What is Your Funniest/Weirdest/Most Memorable Experience With a Customer or Client?
Oh.My.Gosh. I was replying to a customer on Etsy and predictive text completely changed my message. I did not re-read it before sending (BIG mistake), it definitely was bad. My message included the words “sexual requests”. I literally wanted to crawl into a hold and also die of laughter when I re-read it.
