Small business Sunday is a chance for Modern Mama to help promote small businesses, many of which are local. It is an opportunity to help highlight and feature their incredible services and products to our Modern Mama audience. If you own your own business, or know of a wonderful business that should be featured, please email us at lesley@modernmama.com
How did you get the idea for your business?
The idea of Mama Bear Play Club was born in 2020, in the heat of the pandemic. Amanda (pregnant with her third baby) and Andrea (newly having her third baby) knew that there was a need in Parkland County for a health based moms group for mothers to come together and connect.
Our motto is Motherhood is Hard, but supporting each other is easy! And that’s where it grew from. How can we build that connection, and bring people together during their most vulnerable times and connect with other women who are on the same journey?
Amanda and Andrea are both nurses, who knew that moms needed to connect, and making connections with other moms was important but they both also felt that getting health based education that was beneficial in their stage of motherhood was also very important.
So Andrea and Amanda bring in local experts to talk about mental health, sleep, gross motor developments, fourth trimester, pelvic floor health, pre and postnatal exercise, speech and language, car seat safety, starting solids and so much more! We don’t want moms to feel like they need to go down the google rabbit hole – they can attend our group and have the knowledge or the place to ask questions in a nonjudgmental atmosphere.
How did you come up with the name for your business?
We view ourselves as “mama bears”.Mother bears are affectionate, protective, devoted, strict, sensitive and attentive with their young. Pre-Covid we were originally going to be running out of a business with the name “play” in it – so then mama bear play club seemed fitting! If you notice our logo, there is the mama bear leading 3 cubs, as the owners Andrea and Amanda each have 3 children.

What kind of services do you offer?
We are a health based business, offering mom groups that range from 6-8 weeks for parents with children 0-4 years. We also have a mama to be group for parents in their second and third trimester. Partners are always welcome to come!
Amanda and Andrea are Heart and Stroke certified BLS instructors, so monthly infant and child choking and CPR workshops are held around Parkland County and also Edmonton at The Fourth in Southgate Mall.
