This week we are speaking with Laura Winship, Owner of Laura Winship Photography. She is a portrait and wedding photographer who strives to provide beautiful and affordable photography. She offers reasonable rates and often offers “pay-as-you-go” mini-sessions throughout the year, because she wants everyone to have the opportunity to make memories with professional family photos. She is known for doing some unique photo sessions for clients, including one recently that involved all the Disney princesses!

Laura Winship Photography is based out of Chilliwack but services the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland.  You can find her on Instagram and Facebook.

What made you choose this type of business?

I am a portrait and wedding photographer who strives to provide beautiful and affordable photography. I have always been an artistic person, and this is one way I am able to express that. I grew up in a large family, and I treasure the photos I have from throughout my life and I wanna be able to share my passion and give families the gift of memories in the form of photographs.

.

What is your favourite small business (aside from your own)?

I adore so so so many small businesses. I love ‘Bobbypins Curiosities.’ Kayleigh has the most stunning products for home décor, photography props, wedding décor, and even clothing. She is such a creative person and I always find such inspiration from her! She’s actually the one who designed the set for my Christmas minis on November 29!

.

If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?

My biggest piece of advice to someone starting out is to never stop learning. I have been doing photography for almost 10 years, and I still have so much to learn! There is always new technology, different ways to do things, changes in advertising, and so much more! I also learn from my clients everyday. Everybody is different and has different needs, and it is amazing to be constantly on my toes and getting to learn something new every day.

.

Laura Winship PhotographyIf applicable, has your business been negatively affected by COVID19? If so how have you coped?

Covid-19 has definitely effected my business. I am primarily a wedding photographer and with the new restrictions it has butchered the wedding industry. It has definitely been a curveball that we have had to adapt and overcome.

.

What are your long term business goals?

My long term goals as a business haven’t changed much. My biggest goal is to be affordable, while still supporting myself and being able to grow as a business. I know photography isn’t always in everyone’s budget, and I want to change that as much as I can.

.

What are you most looking forward to with the launch of your new business?

The thing I look forward to the most as a growing business is to meet so many new people, express my creativity, and capture all of the smiles and laughter that I can!

What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?

One of my favorite moments as a photographer is when I was photographing a prom, and my client was like a real life snow white. The horse at the farm, wanted to be in every photo, and it was so adorable!

Thank you to Laura Winship for participating in this week’s Small Business Sunday. I have had Laura do our family photos a few times, including some “school photos” in lieu of the traditional ones done at the school. I was very happy with how they turned out. Laura is a people person – great with kids.  She abides by all COVID regulations, she took the time to disinfect any props we used between each client, offered to wear a mask for our outdoor shoot, even though we maintained 6 ft distance. She had some great ideas for poses and locations. We received our digital photos back within a week or two.  Photos are priceless, if you are looking for a unique gift idea for your loved ones, this is a great idea.
