With the holiday season upon us and being in the midst of our second wave of COVID19, featuring our local small business community is a priority – now more than ever. Small businesses are the backbone of our economy and we need to support them however we can.
Today we are featuring Wood and Stencil Co. Wood + Stencil Co. is a mother-daughter team in Burnaby BC. Cherie and Megan are the brains behind this company and make a variety of DIY craft kits. These Knot Your Average DIY Craft Kits are a collection of wood signs and canvas products that will actually be displayed in the home after being made and not just tossed away along with the wrapping in January. Whether you are a crafty person or not, Wood + Stencil Co. sets you up to succeed with each customized kit complete with everything you need to create your own beautiful home decor. Check out their origin story! They ship all across Canada. You can find them on Facebook and Instagram and you can check out this products on their online store.
My 11 year old daughter, Megan, had the idea for this business during the pandemic. We were experimenting with wood signs back in March, and she had so much fun making them that she wanted to spread the joy and make it accessible for others to create.
What is your favourite smallbusiness (aside from your own)?
Ooh – that’s a tough one! There are so many small businesses we like supporting! Do we have to name just one?
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
I say this to my kids all the time – if you have an idea that you are passionate about, just give it a try! If you don’t try, you will never know how it will play out and will spend your life wondering. Even if it doesn’t work out, the journey that you go through will enrich your life tremendously.
If applicable, has your business been affected by COVID19? If so, how?
Ironically, the pandemic has had been a positive effect on us – if we didn’t have all the time spent at home, we wouldn’t have started this business!
What are your long term business goals?
Growing this business together with my daughter and inspiring people to unleash the crafter within them – one DIY kit at a time! Also, we hope to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs to dream big but more importantly to give it a try!
What are you most looking forward to with the launch of your new business?
Seeing my daughter grow and develop new skills that will help her later on in life. She is already so thoughtful and independent in making business decisions that help guide the direction of the company.
What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?
Custom designing a wood sign that reads:
Would Poop Here Again
