We are in the thick of staying home and focusing on social distancing. This is a very challenging time for so many people and so many small businesses. We love supporting local and wanted to do our part in showcasing some fantastic small businesses every week.
One Tough Mother is all about providing Mamas from all walks of life with real information on pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum experience — with a sense of humour (trust me, you’re gonna need one of those more than ever). OTM created a postpartum survival kit and have a thrive bundle. On June 2nd, they are hosting a “Virtual Baby Shower” that will feature 6 experts, a $60 baby shower gift box and chances to win prizes. The funds raised will go to Mamas for Mamas. Click here for tickets. This week we spoke with the founder, Kristine.
What made you choose this type of business?
When my daughter was born in 2017 I was so shocked by the physical and emotional demands of recovery! It kind of felt like being hit by a car and then being given a baby to take care of… I wondered why the details of what it would take to recover physically weren’t more common knowledge. I knew I wanted to create a product that gave new moms the items and resources they needed to be prepared for and be well during the postpartum period: so our Postpartum Survival Kit was born. Fast forward to today and we have our own growing line of clean and vegan postpartum products called Thrive Mama.
What is your favourite small business (aside from your own)?
There are so many amazing, Mama-founded and run small businesses that I love! Recently we’ve been truly blessed to have many of them donate incredible prizes for our Virtual Baby Shower fundraiser for Mamas for Mamas (also founded and run by a Mama!). I want to shout some of them out because they deserve so much love for their generosity: Smash+Tess, Beluga Baby Wraps, Aisle (formerly Lunapads), Glowbal Skincare.
If you had one piece of advice to someone just starting out, what would it be?
We’re all always just starting out. Even when you hit milestones that seemed far away, the goal post shifts. Stick with it. Oh, and get yourself a business partner. Bringing on trained doula and all around amazing person Allison Farrance as a co-owner saved my life!
What are your long term business goals?
Our tagline is our guiding light: helping Mamas thrive. Our goal is to listen to what Mamas need, and give it to them.
What is your funniest/weirdest/most memorable experience with a customer or client?
Hmmmm, can’t be shy in our line of work! Still, it was funny to order hundreds of our Thrive Mama Nipple Balm label from our poor printer guy (they very subtly have the design of a nipple LOL).
Thank you to Kristine for participating in this week’s Small Business Sunday.
